Definition Past continuous tense

This tense tells us about the things or actions which were happening (going on) at some time in the past 

 اردو پہچان 

اسے اردو میں فعل ماضی جاری کہتے ہیں.

اس فعل میں کسی کم کا ہونا یا کرنا زمانہ ماضی میں جاری پایا جاتا ہے. 

اردو فقرے کے آخر میں رہا تھا  ، رہی تھی ، رہے تھے وعیرو آتا ہے .مثلآ

وہ آ رہی تھا

تم کھا رہے تھے 

ہم جا رہے تھے

Past continuous tense simple sentences

Formation of simple sentences

The sentence starts with the subject and adds “was” with subject “I ,he,she,it and singular nouns.
We use “were” with the subject you, they,we and plural nouns.
After helping verb (was, were) we add ing with 1st form of the verb

(go+ing=going )
Then we use object (if any)

اردو فقرے سے انگریزی بنانے کے لیے 

Subject  + Helping verb  + Verb 1st form+ing  + object.

She    +   was       + drink+ing           + milk.

Examples

 ثناء جھولا جھول رہی تھی 

Sana was swinging a swing.

بچے کرکٹ کھیل رہے تھے 

Children were playing cricket .

وہ کہانی لکھ رہا تھا 

He was writing a story .

تم گاڑی چلا رہے تھے 

You were driving a car.

منفی فقرے

منفی فقرے بنانے کے لیے

                             not  کے بعد Helping verb (was,were) 

لگا کر فعل کی پہلی فارم کے ساتھ ing کا اضافہ کرتے ہیں.

Formation of Negative sentences

To make negative sentences we use not after helping verb (was, were)

Subject  + Helping verb + not  + Verb 1st form+ing +  Object.

They      + were         + not + play +ing    + hockey. 

For example:

بچے نہا نہیں رہے تھے 

Children were not taking a bath.

میں آم نہیں کھا رہا تھا

I was not eating mango.

وہ اخبار نہیں پڑھ رہی تھی

She was not reading a newspaper.

Past continuous tense interrogative sentences

Formation of interrogative sentences

To make interrogative sentences we use “was, were” in the beginning of the sentence..

We use question marks (?) at the end of the sentences.
Helping verb + subject + verb 1st form+ing + object ?
were + you + go+ ing to + school ?

سوالیہ فقرات

سوالیہ فقرے کی انگریزی بنانے کے لیے  

Helping verb (was, were,)

کو فقرے کے شروع میں لگاتے ہیں پھر 

                               لکھتےہیں   Subject
(I, we,you, they, he,she,it )

اس کے بعد فعل کی پہلی فارم کے ساتھ
 ing 
 کا اضافہ کرکے لکھتے ہیں اگر فقرے میں سوالیہ الفاظ 
What, why,when, where or whom
 موجود ہوں تو انہیں
 was ,were 
سے بھی پہلے لگاتے ہیں مثلا 

کیا اریحه مالٹا  کھا رہی تھی؟

Was Arieha eating an orange?

اسامہ کہاں جا  رہا تھا؟

Where was Usama going?

کیا میں چاول پکا رہی تھی؟

Was I cooking rice?
