Types of Adjectives of parts of speech


Adjective

An Adjective is a main part of parts of speech.It modifies the noun or noun phrase.It also changes information given about the noun.For example we know the meaning of a “house”.However house +big means there is something different from house+small.Similarly,house+new is different from house+old.The word house is a thing with same meaning in each sentence,but the adjectives big,small,new and old shows the meaning of the ‘house’ very different.

Types of adjective


1.proper adjective.

2.possessive adjective.

3.descriptive(attributive,predicative)adjective.

4.numeral adjective.

5.demonstrative adjective.

6.interrogative adjective.

7.distributive adjective.

8.quantitative adjective.


1. Proper adjective:-

It modifies nouns and pronouns and it is formed from a proper noun.
For example:-

. Proper noun = Pakistan

. I live in Pakistan.

. I am Pakistani.

.Proper noun = China.

.I love Chinese food.

In these examples Pakistani or Chinese are proper adjectives.

2. Possessive adjective:-

Possessive adjectives are used to show ownership of something.
Examples:-

Subject pronoun possessive adjective

I.        I have a flower. My flower is red.
We.    We have a house. Our house is big.
You.   You have a pen. Your pen is new.
They. They have a bird. Their bird is beautiful.
It.      It has ears. Its ears are small.
He.    He has a cycle. His cycle is fast.
She.   She has a dress. Her dress is blue.

3. Descriptive adjective:-

It is used to express the shape,color or size of a person, place or thing.
Examples:-
Color       size      shape           condition       value
Blue        big        square          cold              intelligent
Yellow    small     round           hot               beautiful
Red        tall        oval             sunny            rich
Black      long      rectangular   cloudy          poor
White     short     Star              rainy             smart

Use of Descriptive Objectives

She is an intelligent girl.
The weather is cloudy.
The house is big.
The flower is red.
The clock is round.

4. Numeral adjective:-

It tells us how much or how many.It also shows serials,orders or numbers of persons ,places or things. It is divided into two types.

Definite Numerals.

It Shows exact numbers e.g.

Multiplicative

                (Single, Double, Tripple)

Cardinals

                (First , Second, Third)

Ordinals

                (One, Two, Three)

Indefinite Numerals

It does not show an exact number such as many, all, few, several, enough etc.

5. Demonstrative Adjective

It is used to show a person or a thing as is meant.
For example,

Singular

             (This, That)

Plural

              (These Those)

Use of Demonstrative Adjective as Noun

This glass is broken
That chair is new.These birds are flying.Those boys are playing.

Use of Demonstrative Adjective as Pronoun

This is my glass. 
That is his chair. 
These are her birds.
Those are Ali’s flowers.

6. Interrogative Adjective.

It modifies a noun, It can not stand alone and generally follow a verb.

Examples:-
Whose bag is this?
Which book are you reading?
Where are you going?
What story do you want to write?
They went with whom?

7. Distributive Adjective. 

It shows that the persons or things counted collectively.It refers to each and every person or thing.

Examples:-
One of the students must have taken a pen.
Either you eat it or you do not.
Each of us is hungry.
Do You have any toys?
Both of them are naughty.
My brother is not a scholar, neither am I.

8. Quantitative Adjectives. 

It shows the amount or number of objects.

Examples:-
A little
          She has got a little food, it is enough to eat.
          She has got a little money, it is enough to pay bills.
A few
          She has got a few friends so she will never be alone.
          I have got a few pencils to write essays.
So Few
         There are so few children in the park, so one can talk           to each other.
         There are so few plates in the basket, so she can not           borrow one to you.
