Definition of Verb
A verb is an important part of speech. Without a verb, no sentence can be completed. It expresses action or state of being.
Types of Verbs
These are the types of verbs: action verbs transitive verbs, intransitive verbs, linking verbs, dynamic verbs, stative verbs, helping verbs, and regular and irregular verbs.
Transitive and intransitive verbs are used in the active voice and passive verbs are used in the passive voice.
Action verbs:
these are the verbs that explain the action of the subject i.e. swim, run, hide, laugh, and play.
Examples of Verbs
· They play.
· He laughed.
Transitive Verbs
These verbs are used to explain the action of an objective. They can be a thing, noun or pronoun.
Examples of Transitive Verbs
· Sara gave him some money.
· She threw a ball.
· They beat him.
In these subject and verb alone could not make a clear sense without an object that receives the action.
Intransitive verbs
Intransitive verbs are verbs that describe the action without an object, adverb, verb complement, adjectives or prepositions can be followed.
Examples of
· He played.
· She ate swiftly.
· They ran in the race.
In these examples, the subject and verb describe a complete sense without tan object.
Linking verbs
Linking verbs are verbs that express senses like smell, feel, and taste.
Examples of Linking verbs
· She feels tired.
· They smell pasta.
In these sentences smell and feel are linking words that make sense clear.
Regular verb
This verb is also called a weak verb. Its past participle and past tense are made by adding-d or-ed i.e. call, accept.
Examples Regular Verb
· She called the doctor.
· He accepted the invitation.
Irregular Verb
These verbs are also called strong verbs. Usually in these verbs rules for common verb forms are not used and there is no addition of –d or –ed i.e. go, come, sleep, etc.
Examples Irregular Verb
· They went to the market yesterday.
· She slept at the time.
Dynamic Verbs
These verbs are used to show an action, process, or feeling i.e. grow, drive and throw.
Examples of
· She is growing plants.
· They threw garbage in the street.
· He is driving a truck.
Stative Verb
These verbs are used to explain a state or situation i.e. know, have, look, and seem.
Examples Stative Verb
· She does not know about this address.
· My mother is looking too happy to do more cooking.
Helping Verbs
These verbs help the main to describe tense and voice. There are three primary kinds of helping verbs.
Examples of Helping Verbs
1. Be(is, am, are, was, were, and been)
2. Do (did, does, and done)
3. Have(has and had)
Model Helping Verbs
We use these verbs to specify the meaning of the main verb i.e. will, would, can, could, shall, should, might, must.
Examples Model Helping Verbs
· You should visit the library.
