Types of Prepositions

Preposition


   ‘Preposition’is a word that  shows a relationship between the noun and pronoun in the sentence. A preposition is followed by a noun or pronoun and It cannot be followed by a verb. e.g.

Preposition Examples

1.The cat on the table is white.
In this  sentence the preposition “on”shows the relationship between ‘cat’ and ‘table’. 
prepositions are simple and small words e.g. in, on, at, for, off , under and over. The prepositions can be used to describe time,place or a location.e.g.
  • The cat is under the table. In this sentence the preposition ‘under’ shows place.
  • We will be there at ten ‘o’ clock. In this sentence the preposition ‘at’ shows time.
  • She is coming by airplane.In this sentence the preposition ‘by’ shows manner.
  • He went to school.In this sentence the preposition ‘to’ shows direction.

Types of Prepositions

There are five different types of prepositions:
  • Simple prepositions

  • Compound preposition

  • Double preposition

  • Phrase preposition

  • Participle preposition

  • Simple Preposition

Simple preposition is always consist of one word such as: in, on, at, under,over ,after,up,of, for,to,with, etc

Examples of simple preposition


  • He lives near my house.
  • The car is in the garage.
  • The vase is on the fridge.
  • The cat was under the tree.
  • The parrot is near the cage.

Double Prepositions

  Two simple prepositions used together are called double preposition. e.g. out of, into, within,onto.

Some examples of double preposition

  • The monkey climbed onto the tree.
  • She went to school without her pen.
  • She turned into a good girl.
  • The loud noise came from within the stadium.
  • They never leave without their phone.
  • He was unable to get out of the meeting.

Compound or complex  Prepositions

  It usually consist of two or more words,e.g. In front of,according to,across from etc.
  • The cat was sitting across from the table.
  • He is standing in front of the bank.
  • The weather will be cloudy today according to the news.

Participle Preposition

This kind of preposition has ending with “ing”  “ed” or “en” such as regarding, concerning,considering ,provided ,given, granted ,etc.

   Examples of participle preposition

  • I am interested in anything concerning art.
  • All the students were present including the new one.
  • The new boss was asking questions regarding her behavior.
  • Considering her age, she did a great job.
  • The job was taken back from him.
  • They were surprised as they were not expecting me.

Phrase Prepositions

  

 Examples include phrases are


       at home, before class, and on time.
  • She will get to the class on time.
  • She found her phone under the table.
  • They wanted to discuss the project before conference.
  • The kids loved the gifts from their parents.
